The 09-10 NBA Season is a month away and I'm getting damn excited! Transactions were going off like a bank this summer and pretty much every team had a solid change... except for the Kings for some reason. You'd think having the worst record in the league make you wanna change SOMEthing. But hey, I'm not a GM. Anyway, I'm gonna go Division by Division for the next week or so to give my opinion of each team in the league. Agree with me or not.
Southwest Division: (going in order of their 08-09 standings)
San Antonio Spurs08-09: 1st SW Div.
09-10 Predic: 1st SW
Analysis: As always.. the Spurs' outcome will depend on their health. They added some nice depth to their team with all-around offensive scorer RJ, veteran Antonio McDyess, solid backup Keith Bogans, and rookie Dejuan Blair. The rookie's 6'7", but he's a tank. Coach Pop is one of the best at utilizing role players. The new additions will definitely help the Big 3, especially at times of an unexpected injury.. or expected. The biggest loss: Bruce Bowen via trade/retirement. Yes he was getting old, and yes noone really liked him.. but you can't help but appreciate the fire he brought out of the game's Elite scorers. His role was to give em a hard time. It was his job, and he did it well. His absence pretty much takes away the swag that San Antonio had all those years. How intimidating are they defensively now without the guy that pissed everyone off? I guess we'll find out.
If healthy, I say Finals. Then again.. no Bowen for Kobe.
Houston Rockets08-09: 2nd SW Div.
09-10 Predic.: 3rd SW
Analysis: I'm a fan of this team. Full of workhorse roleplayers! Newly added was one of the league's top roleplayers in Trevor Ariza. Sad to say, the Yao-TMac duo will once again be impossible to see this year. But with TMac somewhat healthy surrounded by the mirage of roleplayers the Rockets have.. Houston can still cause some damage. Aaron Brooks is coming off a solid rookie year, and my undercover-favourite big man combo ScoLandry will continue to cause mayhem in the paint! It won't be highly successful, but the Houston fans will have a fun year. Yao's presence later in the year could shed a lot of light.
Dallas Mavericks08-09: 3rd SW Div.
09-10 Predic.: 2nd SW
Analysis: J-Kidd and Dirk are gonna love their season this year. Thanks to 2 words.. The Matrix. Kidd's assist count will be on an uprise with Marion running the lanes, and Dirk can shoot as much as he wants with Marion being the one of the greatest at chasing loose balls. This team's STACKED! Minus Stackhouse, of course. Terry and Howard will still continue to do their thing and hopefully strive with the running game. Damp's still effective, Gooden will provide good minutes off the bench, QRoss is an effective defender, and Tim Thomas will make a solid veteran impact when he's back from injury. And continue to keep an eye on my boy, JJ Barea!!!
If the Mavs get the chemistry going, they may sneak into the Western Finals!
New Orleans Hornets08-09: 4th SW
09-10 Predic.: 4th SW
Analysis: I really don't see much of a change from last year. The Chandler for Okafor deal didn't seem to help anybody. I thought the activity of Tyson Chandler was good for the Hornets, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Neither of the 2 are great at staying healthy. I guess New Orleans can only hope that CP3 turns even more fantastic, David West's back feels good, and that their shooters keep hitting.
If they could still overcome the powerful Western Conference into the playoffs, I still see a first-round exit.
Memphis Grizzlies08-09: 5th SW
09-10: 5th SW
Analysis: The most interesting experiment in the NBA this year!!! I read an article that showed Memphis being last in the league in some sort of ball-movement-% stat. Enter Allen Iverson and Zach Randolph. Not to knock on AI (coz I love him as much as anyone), but MAN what was Memphis thinking? 2 blackholes to a young team? I mean not that Iverson doesn't pass, but we all know he demands the ball NUFF. Zach Randolph is pretty much an "in the paint" version of AI, and he's a headcase. I really think its horrible for upcoming stars, Rudy Gay and OJ Mayo, who were supposed to be a dynamic duo of the future. OJ's promising career may have just hit a speedbump. But hey.. nothing's impossible. If coach Lionel Hollins actually gets this team to gel.. Then he's got my vote for Coach of the Year!
Next stop.. Pacific Division
